This former windmill, now a water tower on Tainers Hill, Kenilworth

This former windmill, now a water tower on Tainers Hill, Kenilworth, was built in the mid-18th century and continued in service as a windmill until it was replaced by steam power in 1854. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the intriguing transformation of a former windmill into a water tower on Tainers Hill, Kenilworth. Dating back to the mid-18th century, this historic structure served as a fully functional windmill until 1854 when it succumbed to the advancements of steam power. However, rather than fading into obscurity, this resilient building found new purpose and underwent an impressive conversion. In 1855, the mill machinery was dismantled and replaced with innovative waterworks technology. Thus began its second life as Kenilworth's inaugural water tower – a vital source that quenched the town's thirst for over eight decades until 1939. This architectural marvel stood tall against time and weathered countless storms while faithfully supplying clean water to its grateful residents. The photograph itself is a testament to both history and progress. Taken on December 5th, 1962, during the vibrant era of the 1960s, it showcases not only the remarkable architecture but also highlights how structures can adapt and evolve alongside changing needs. Preserved by Mirrorpix in their Memory Lane Prints collection, this image invites us to reflect upon our past while appreciating how innovation has shaped our present landscape. It serves as a reminder that even inanimate objects have stories worth telling – stories of resilience, reinvention, and endurance.
