Engines were roaring and competition was fierce one day in June 1980 when a group of car

Engines were roaring and competition was fierce one day in June 1980 when a group of car lovers raced around Blaydon industrial estate at speeds of up to 400mph.
But despite the high speed, there was no trouble with the police as the vehicles in question were actually radio-controlled models, taking part in their very own Grand Prix at Dutton Forshaws garage.
Belonging to members of the North East Radio Controlled Car Club, the models hit speeds of up to 60mph during the laps - an equivalent to a scaled-up speed of 400mph.
The fastest time had Jim Brown, of Gosforth, pictured far right, with five minutes, seven seconds. Also taking part were Dave Coates, pictured middle, and Alan Clarke. (Also pictured are Les Bailey and John Clark)
