MCC Tour of South Africa 1964.
8th December 1964.
David Allen and Fred Titmus after the first Test at Durban.
The tourists were captained by Michael John Knight Smith who had taken Warwickshire near to the top of the county championship.
Cricket fans gave him little chance of returning towards the end of February with the rubber, for the bowling available to him looked decidedly limited in terms of a touring side and South Africa had performed well in Australia.
Yet Smith and his men achieved what Peter Mays 1956-57 side failed to do and into the bargain went through their entire programme of 19 matches undefeated

Capturing the Triumph - MCC Tour of South Africa 1964
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print from Memory Lane Prints takes us back to the historic MCC Tour of South Africa in 1964. On the 8th of December, after the first Test at Durban, we see two cricket legends, David Allen and Fred Titmus, sharing a moment of camaraderie. Led by Michael John Knight Smith, who had previously led Warwickshire near the top of the county championship, this touring side faced skepticism from cricket fans. The bowling options seemed limited compared to their formidable opponents who had performed exceptionally well in Australia. However, against all odds and expectations, Smith and his men achieved what Peter Mays' side failed to do in 1956-57 – they remained undefeated throughout their entire program consisting of 19 matches. The image captures not only a significant victory but also reflects the spirit and determination that propelled these players towards success. In an era when cricket was more than just a sport; it was a symbol of national pride and unity for both England and South Africa. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let us celebrate these remarkable athletes who defied predictions and etched their names into history. This photo serves as a testament to their unwavering dedication and reminds us that greatness can be achieved even when facing seemingly insurmountable challenges.
