Reginald Herbert Spooner, one of the greatest batsmen of Edwardian England

Reginald Herbert Spooner, one of the greatest batsmen of Edwardian England.
He played in 10 Test matches for England, seven of them against Australia, between 1905 and 1912, and against South Africa at Lords in 1912 he scored 119. He never toured abroad with England, business or injury preventing him making the trips to Australia in 1903-04 and 1920-21. In fact he played very little first-class cricket after the First World War, retiring in 1923 with 13, 681 runs (including 31 centuries) at an average of 36.28. He scored five double-centuries for Lancashire, his 200 not out against Yorkshire at Old Trafford in 1910 being the first double-century in the " Roses" match, and still the only such score for Lancashire in these matches. He was also a brilliant fielder at cover-point, and as a Rugby centre-threequarter he played for England against Wales at Swansea in 1902-03. In 1945 and 1946 he was president of Lancashire C.C.C

Reginald Herbert Spooner - A Legend of Edwardian England

EDITORS COMMENTS
. Step back in time with this print capturing the essence of Reginald Herbert Spooner, one of the greatest batsmen to grace the cricket fields during the Edwardian era. With a career spanning from 1905 to 1923, Spooner's talent and dedication were evident as he played ten Test matches for England. Though business commitments and unfortunate injuries prevented him from touring abroad with his national team, Spooner left an indelible mark on English cricket. His remarkable performance against South Africa at Lords in 1912, where he scored an impressive 119 runs, showcased his unwavering skill and determination. Not only was Spooner known for his batting prowess but also for his exceptional fielding abilities at cover-point. His agility and precision made him a force to be reckoned with on the field. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that beyond cricket, Spooner displayed versatility as a Rugby centre-threequarter when representing England against Wales in 1902-03. Throughout his illustrious career playing for Lancashire County Cricket Club (C. C. C), Spooner achieved numerous milestones including scoring an astonishing five double-centuries. Notably, his unbeaten score of 200 against Yorkshire at Old Trafford in 1910 marked the first-ever double-century in the historic "Roses" match. Even after retiring from professional cricket in 1923 with over thirteen thousand runs under his belt (including thirty-one centuries), Spooner's legacy continued to thrive within Lancashire C. C. C. In fact, he served as its president during both 1945 and 1946.
