Signalman Raymond Short, 20, of Fossway, Walkergate, Newcastle

Signalman Raymond Short, 20, of Fossway, Walkergate, Newcastle, joined the Army after leaving Walkergate Secondary Modern School, he trained as a signal operator and went to the 30 Signal Regiment at Dorset. The year previous to this photo he had spent with the Navy on board the 12, 000 ton assault ship HMS Fearless.
The Fearless docked on the River Tyne for the first time and stayed for a 10 day visit.
Two fellow North-Easterners were among the crew - Graeme Lawson, 24, of Sandringham Road, South Gosforth, who works with the satellite Skynet and John Ramm, of Woodhorn Road, Newbiggin, who joined the ship only two weeks previous after finishing his training.

After completing his education at Walkergate Secondary Modern School, Raymond made the courageous decision to join the Army. With rigorous training as a signal operator under his belt, he found himself stationed at the esteemed 30 Signal Regiment in Dorset. However, this image holds more than just Raymond's military journey. The previous year had seen him embark on an extraordinary adventure with the Royal Navy aboard the impressive 12,000-ton assault ship HMS Fearless. During its momentous visit to the River Tyne, which lasted for ten days, locals were thrilled to witness such a magnificent vessel docked on their shores. Amongst Fearless' crew were two fellow North-Easterners who undoubtedly shared Raymond's sense of pride and camaraderie - Graeme Lawson from South Gosforth and John Ramm from Newbiggin.
