THE Queen Mother yesterday upstaged even the Bard on the eve of his big birthday
THE Queen Mother yesterday upstaged even the Bard on the eve of his big birthday celebrations in Stratford-on-Avon. Prince Charles and Princess Diana may be catching the headlines in Italy but the Queen Mother also did a power of good for international relations back home. Hundreds of delighted foreign tourists joined the townspeople who welcomed the royal visitor on a whirl-wind schedule which belies her 84 years. A cool figure in ice blue, she was scheduled to spend four hours in Stratford but she stayed nearly five despite the heat. " She insisted on speaking to so many people" explained Charles Smith-Ryland, Lord lieutenant of Warwickshire. " She is an amazing lady who loves to meet people, especially the children."
Our photograph shows the Queen Mother receiving posies from children in the crowd.
