These five sacks of litter were collected in less than 20 minutes by children walking to

These five sacks of litter were collected in less than 20 minutes by children walking to school in Canley. Two hundred children gathered the litter on their way to Henry Parkes Infant School, Prior Deram Walk, Canley, Coventry, yesterday. The head, Mrs Margaret Johnson, said that the children, aged between five and seven, all live within a 500-yard radius of the school. On Tuesday the children collected three sacks of rubbish from their own school grounds. Mrs Johnson said that the activity had been arranged in response to the " Coventry Evening Telegraph" litter campaign as an attempt to teach children to respect their environment.
" The city engineers department are going to show a film on litter in assembly. We hope it will be a real educational process, but we need parents to back us up at home. " We shall say to the children that we cannot pick up all this litter every morning, so what is the answer? Hopefully they will say it shouldn t be dropped there in the first place."

EDITORS COMMENTS

This powerful print captures the incredible efforts of a group of children from Canley, Coventry, who took it upon themselves to clean up their neighborhood. In less than 20 minutes, these determined youngsters managed to collect five sacks full of litter on their way to Henry Parkes Infant School. Led by their headteacher, Mrs Margaret Johnson, over 200 children between the ages of five and seven participated in this inspiring initiative. Living within close proximity to the school, these young environmentalists recognized the importance of respecting and caring for their surroundings. This activity was organized as a response to the ongoing "Coventry Evening Telegraph" litter campaign aimed at raising awareness about keeping our environment clean. Mrs Johnson emphasized that this effort was not just a one-time event but part of an ongoing educational process. The city engineers department even planned to screen a film on litter during assembly time. However, Mrs Johnson stressed that parental support at home was crucial in reinforcing these lessons. The dedication shown by these children serves as a reminder that we all have a responsibility towards our environment. Let us learn from them and strive for cleaner communities where littering is simply not an option.
