Young actors at Shelley High School are aiming for a hat-trick of drama successes with

Young actors at Shelley High School are aiming for a hat-trick of drama successes with their latest production which is being assessed by the Royal National Theater. War is the topical subject of The Coca-Cola Dragon, although teacher Mr Steven Downs, who wrote the play, says the idea came last year before the war started in the Gulf. Some 16 actors and eight musicians put weeks of preparation into the production, under the supervision of Mr Downs and co-directors Marilyn Faricy and Julie Root. 14th February 1991

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see a group of young actors from Shelley High School who are determined to achieve their third consecutive drama success. Their latest production, "The Coca-Cola Dragon" is being evaluated by the prestigious Royal National Theater. Despite its timely theme of war, it is interesting to note that the play was conceived by their teacher, Mr Steven Downs, before the Gulf War erupted last year. With utmost dedication and passion, 16 talented actors and eight skilled musicians have invested weeks of preparation into bringing this thought-provoking production to life. Under the careful guidance of Mr Downs and co-directors Marilyn Faricy and Julie Root, these schoolchildren have honed their acting skills to deliver an unforgettable performance. This snapshot captures a moment frozen in time on February 14th, 1991 - a testament to the enduring power of theater as a medium for education and entertainment. The image evokes nostalgia for an era when children embraced creativity through dramatic arts. Preserved within Huddersfield Examiner Archive's Memory Lane Prints collection, this photograph serves as a reminder that even amidst challenging times like war, young minds can find solace in artistic expression. It showcases not only the talent nurtured at Shelley High School but also highlights how theater can serve as an outlet for self-discovery and personal growth among students.
