EDITORS COMMENTS

In this photo print, the intensity of a thrilling horse race at Newcastle is frozen in time. Jockey Alec Russell takes center stage as he faces the consequences of causing serious interference on his mount, Downstream. Suspended for three days, Russell's daring move to challenge a furlong out nearly brought down Flintham, leaving him beaten by just a neck by Some Hand. The image captures the heart-stopping moment when these magnificent creatures thunder towards the finishing post, their muscular bodies straining with every ounce of energy. The grandstand looms in the background, filled with spectators who are undoubtedly holding their breaths in anticipation. Flintham emerges as a desperately unlucky loser amidst this sensational race. However, due to Downstream's disqualification and subsequent placement last, Flintham is moved up into second position – an unexpected twist that adds another layer of drama to an already intense event. After being interviewed by stewards about his actions on Kings Hussar earlier that day (which marked his forty-third win of the season), Alec Russell reflects on his suspension with wry humor: "I think I might have earned myself a rest". This photograph from 7th August 1972 encapsulates not only the action-packed world of horseracing but also serves as a reminder of how even seasoned jockeys can face setbacks while pursuing victory on these majestic animals.
