On the ropes... these cubs are in training for a tug-of-war competition at Meltham Gala. The youngsters - from the Friday pack of the 5th Holme Valley (Meltham) Cubs - are (from left): Christopher Berry, Dean Sykes, Richard Berry, Martin Loyd, Sam Philpot and David Chitty. The gala week starts on June 27 and will climax with the gala in Meltham Hall Park on Sunday, July 5. This will feature a parade - complete with floats - from Broadlands to the park. The gala will feature rides, charity stalls, a coal carrying competition, the Cubs tug-of-war, Meltham and Meltham Mills Band and majorettes. Gala Committee chairman Clr Shirley Watson said the week will feature dancing displays, a snooker competition, school fetes, a disco and a window-dressing competition. 27th May 1992
