EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming photo print, entertainer Malcolm Yaffe brings joy and laughter to the last pupils of Kirklees' smallest school during their final school party. Whitley Lower CofE First and Middle School, nestled near Dewsbury, is a historic institution that has been educating children for 150 years. However, due to declining enrollment numbers, Kirklees Council has made the difficult decision to close its doors. Captured in the summer of 1986, this image encapsulates both the bittersweet nature of endings and the resilience of these young students. With only ten pupils ranging from five to twelve years old, Whitley Lower holds a special place in their hearts as they bid farewell to their beloved school. As Malcolm Yaffe takes center stage with his performance, he effortlessly keeps smiles on each child's face. His presence serves as a reminder that even amidst change and uncertainty, happiness can still be found. The energy in the room is palpable as these youngsters revel in one last celebration together before embarking on new educational journeys at schools located at Overthorpe or Thornhill. This photograph not only captures a specific moment in time but also represents an era gone by – the 1980s – when small community schools like Whitley Lower were treasured gems within West Yorkshire's education system. It stands as a testament to the power of connection and reminds us that even though institutions may close their doors, memories live on forever.
