Some streets being demolished in Carlin How, and bulldozers removing houses
Some streets being demolished in Carlin How, and bulldozers removing houses. Built about a century ago these houses were provided for miners and their families when the local ironstone mines were opening. They were very old fashioned, in some streets people had to cross the back street at the rear of their homes in order to reach the toilets. 8th June 1978

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in history as some streets in Carlin How, North Yorkshire are being demolished and bulldozers tirelessly remove houses. These humble abodes, built approximately a century ago, were originally provided for miners and their families during the opening of the local ironstone mines. Stepping back in time to the 1970s, these houses exuded an old-fashioned charm that belied their outdated amenities. In certain streets, residents had to traverse the back street behind their homes just to access basic facilities like toilets. It serves as a stark reminder of the challenging living conditions endured by mining communities during this era. The image evokes mixed emotions - nostalgia for a simpler time tinged with sadness at witnessing the destruction of cherished homes. The scene also symbolizes progress and redevelopment taking place within Redcar and Cleveland. Preserved through this photograph is not only a visual representation but also an important historical record of residential life in Carlin How. As we gaze upon it today, we can appreciate how far society has come while acknowledging the sacrifices made by those who came before us. Memory Lane Prints presents this remarkable snapshot from our past without any commercial intentions. Instead, we aim to honor and preserve memories like these for future generations to reflect upon and learn from.
