Resisting temptation. . . pupils of Scissett Middle School try to resist tucking into this celebratory cake, made to mark the 50th anniversary of the school. The four youngsters were the stars of a special production called A Trip Down Memory Lane, written by teacher Mrs Ruth Smith and produced by deputy head Mrs Judith Turner, who also made the cake. They are (from left) Philip Harrison, Sophie Mannion, Laura Kenny and Richard Brookes. The photo captures a moment filled with anticipation and self-control as these young students struggle to resist indulging in the delicious cake before them. With wide eyes fixed on the mouthwatering creation adorned with vibrant icing and intricate decorations, their determination is evident. This snapshot was taken during an open week at Scissett Middle School where visitors connected to the school over its 50-year history were invited for a nostalgic journey down memory lane. The event showcased memorabilia dating back to 1940 when Skelmanthorpe Modern first opened its doors before transforming into Scissett Middle School in 1974. Adding another layer of charm to this occasion was a themed '1940s day', where both children and staff donned period-appropriate clothing. This photo encapsulates not only resistance but also highlights how education can bridge generations through shared experiences. Preserved within our Memory Lane Prints collection from Huddersfield Examiner Archive, this image serves as a reminder that resisting temptation can be just as rewarding as giving in.
