EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming print from 1989, Blind Kirklees councillor Stewart Heppleston takes center stage as he presents a generous £795 cheque to the Royal National Institute of the Blind. Representing the pupils at Outlane Junior School, these compassionate children raised the funds through donations after being inspired by a talk on the RNIB's important work by appeals officer Mrs. Helene Saunders. Captured in this snapshot is Mrs. Saunders herself, standing beside Clr Heppleston as she gratefully accepts the cheque on behalf of her organization. It is worth noting that Clr Heppleston also serves as governor of Outlane Junior School, highlighting his commitment to both education and supporting those with visual impairments. This image encapsulates an era where fundraising efforts were driven by genuine empathy and community spirit. The children's dedication to making a difference shines through their successful campaign, demonstrating how even young minds can create positive change.
