Preserving the Legacy - Billingham Synthonia's New Gates, 26th January 1989
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from Teesside Archive's Memory Lane Prints collection, we are transported back to a significant moment in the history of Billingham Synthonia sports club. The image showcases the unveiling of their brand new gates, a testament to the community spirit and dedication that defined this beloved football club. Facing the need for replacements for their old wooden gates at the stadium, Billingham Synthonia turned to an unlikely source of assistance – the Employment Training scheme organized by the Teesside Chamber of Commerce. On that chilly winter day in 1989, Gerry Hall, Eric Carroll, Peter Toogood, and Tony Smith stepped up to carry out this important task. These skilled individuals were based at ICI Wilton but willingly lent their expertise to support their local team. The photograph captures not only these four dedicated workers but also hints at a larger story unfolding within its frame. It speaks volumes about how sport can bring people together and inspire acts of generosity within a community. As players gather nearby on the pitch with anticipation etched on their faces, one cannot help but feel a sense of pride and gratitude towards those who contributed selflessly behind-the-scenes. This image serves as a poignant reminder that sporting clubs like Billingham Synthonia are more than just venues for matches; they embody shared values and cherished memories that endure through generations. The new gates symbolize progress and resilience
