Starving Dutch population bombed with food -- streaming from the bomb bay of a low-flying B-17 Flying Fortress of U.S. EIGTH AIR FORCE Ss 390th Bomb Group are cases of U.S. Armys 10 in 1 rations, each containing three meals for ten men. Eight hundred tons of food --enough food for 1, 080, 000 meals--was dropped by 400 heavy bombers on four targets on May 2. Marked with a large white cross and a red light, each area was surrounded by a circle a mile in diameter of cheering and sobbing staving Dutch civilians standing behind a row of green lights. The B-17s had been loaded for several days in England pending a clearance of dropping areas by the Germans. The menu was sausage, bacon, corned beef, baked beans, cereal, vegetables, coffee, condensed milk, sugar, preserved butter and a variety of other items. 2nd May 1945

EDITORS COMMENTS
Starving Dutch population receives a lifeline from above -- an extraordinary scene captured in this powerful photo print. As a low-flying B-17 Flying Fortress of the U. S. Eighth Air Force soars over war-torn Netherlands, it unleashes a torrent of hope and sustenance upon the desperate civilians below. In an unprecedented act of compassion, cases of U. S. Army's 10-in-1 rations cascade from the bomb bay, each containing three meals for ten men. A staggering eight hundred tons of food, equivalent to over one million meals, rain down on four carefully selected targets on that fateful day: May 2nd, 1945. Marked with a large white cross and guided by red lights, these designated areas become beacons of salvation amidst chaos. Behind rows of green lights stand cheering and sobbing Dutch civilians who have endured unimaginable hunger during World War II. The B-17s had been meticulously loaded in England while awaiting clearance from German forces to drop their precious cargo. Finally granted permission, these brave aviators fulfill their mission to alleviate suffering and bring nourishment where it is most desperately needed. The menu contained within those life-saving packages reads like a feast after years of deprivation: sausage, bacon, corned beef, baked beans, cereal, vegetables - all accompanied by coffee laced with condensed milk and sugar; preserved butter adding richness to every bite. This remarkable photograph serves as both testament to human resilience and proof that even in times of war there can be acts of kindness that transcend borders.
