The Nuns Olympics. Left to right Barbara Bremel, Kevin Moran

The Nuns Olympics. Left to right Barbara Bremel, Kevin Moran and Susan Crosland during filming at Chiswick Polytechnic sports ground.
They didn t have quite the organisation, perhaps, of the Munich Olympics. But the ecclesiastical games yesterday did have a spirit of their own. There were nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars gathered in Chiswick to display their prowess for Spike Milligan, whose new BBC TV comedy series " A Milligan for all seasons" starts next week. There were hurdle races for the nuns (at least two of whom were fellers), pole vaults for priests... and an amazing- confessional relay, with each runner stopping to confess every 100 yards. Producer Roger Race, slightly bemused, said: " Spike told us to order a couple of dozen actors in clerical garb and this is the result." Spike himself turned out for the hurdles, dressed as a Roma n Catholic priest. Hoping to achieve immortality, presumably, as the Father of the Games. 4th September 1972

The Nuns Olympics - A Spirited Display of Ecclesiastical Prowess

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured by Ron Burton, we are transported back to the memorable day of September 4th, 1972. The Chiswick Polytechnic sports ground was transformed into a unique arena where nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars gathered to showcase their athletic abilities for none other than the legendary Spike Milligan. As part of his new BBC TV comedy series "A Milligan for all seasons". Spike orchestrated these ecclesiastical games with an unparalleled sense of humor and creativity. While lacking the grandeur and organization of the Munich Olympics, these games possessed a spirit entirely their own. The nuns took on hurdle races with surprising agility (some even turning out to be men in disguise), while priests engaged in pole vaults that surely left spectators amazed. However, it was the confessional relay that truly stole the show - each runner pausing every 100 yards to confess their sins before continuing on. Producer Roger Race admitted feeling slightly bemused by Spike's request for actors dressed in clerical garb but couldn't deny that it resulted in this unforgettable spectacle. And there amidst it all stood Spike himself, donning a Roman Catholic priest's attire as he fearlessly tackled hurdles - perhaps hoping to etch his name as the Father of these Games into eternity. This remarkable photograph encapsulates not only a momentous event but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our ability to find joy even within unconventional settings.
