EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the iconic Cliff Mitchelmore and his wife Jean Metcalfe at their home in Reigate, Surrey. With a remarkable career spanning over 60 years, Cliff anchored coverage of historic events such as the Apollo moon landings and two general elections. From 1957 to 1965, he presented the renowned BBC Television show Tonight, leaving an indelible mark on British broadcasting. Cliff's love story with Jean is equally enchanting. They tied the knot on March 4th, 1950 after a unique courtship that began while Jean was presenting Two-Way Family Favourites in London and Cliff was stationed in Hamburg for the British Forces Broadcasting Service. Despite not meeting face to face for six months, their connection grew stronger until they finally met and quickly became engaged. Cliff fondly referred to it as "love at first hearing". Their union blessed them with a daughter named Jenny Michelmore who pursued acting and a son named Guy Michelmore who followed in his father's footsteps as a broadcaster and composer. Throughout his illustrious career, Cliff had the privilege of interviewing notable figures including Prince Charles, Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and even an aspiring young David Bowie at just seventeen years old. He also found himself anchoring major live events like reporting on President John F Kennedy's assassination in 1963 while being live on air. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to broadcasting excellence, Cliff Mitchelmore was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1969.
