Betty and Robert Thewlis were delighted when workmen at last finished alterations to their house. For 10 years they had shared their front door with the entrance to a public lavatory built right next door to their home in North Shields. Sometimes women wanting to spend a penny; would end up in their living room. Tynemouth Councils Cleansing Department stepped in and built a completely separate entrance on the lavatory side of the semi. They even constructed a separate path to the lavatory entrance so that women would not inadvertently go into the Thewlis home. The ladies sign which had hung over their front door has also been moved. 41-year-old Mrs Thewlis is the lavatory attendant and sometimes after she has locked up for the evening people still bang on their for saying they want to spend a penny. North Shields, North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear. 6th April 1970

Relief at Last! Betty and Robert Thewlis Bid Farewell to Unwanted House Guests
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness the sheer joy radiating from Betty and Robert Thewlis as they finally bid farewell to a decade-long inconvenience. For years, their humble abode in North Shields had shared its front door with a public lavatory, leading to some rather unexpected encounters. Imagine the surprise of finding oneself face-to-face with an uninvited visitor seeking restroom facilities right in your living room! However, thanks to the intervention of Tynemouth Councils Cleansing Department, this quirky situation has now been rectified. The hardworking workmen have completed alterations that include a separate entrance for the lavatory on the side of their semi-detached home. A new path ensures that women will no longer unintentionally wander into the Thewlis household. To add further relief, the iconic ladies sign that once hung over their front door has been relocated. This small but significant change marks a fresh start for Betty and Robert as they bid farewell to unwanted late-night knocks from individuals still seeking access to what was once an integral part of their daily lives. This heartwarming image captures not only a momentous occasion for one couple but also serves as a reminder of how even seemingly mundane changes can bring immense happiness and peace within our homes.
