The Dig at Bayley Lane, Coventry, Warwickshire, 9th May 1989

The Dig at Bayley Lane, Coventry, Warwickshire, 9th May 1989.
Russell Trimble, the site assistant, with some of the treasures discovered at The Bayley Lane dig, near the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum.
Archeologists have sifted through the remains of a 13th Century chess pit to uncover fascinating secrets about Coventrys past. The chess pit is providing an insight in to mediaeval mans sanitary and eating habits.
Pollen seeds, textiles, bone and moss - the 13th century equivalent of toilet roll - are some of the finds unearthed by the archaeologists, who started work on the site last year, in 1988.
They say the Bayley Lane dig is particularly interesting because it represents layer upon layer of undisturbed history, from the 12th or 13th century to the present day.
Excavator Ray Wallwork said " What we have here is a microcosm of Coventrys history. It shows features from just about every period, with building on top of building."
Apart front the cess pit the archaeologists have discovered a Georgian building, a 15th century cellar and a Victorian factory. But they hope the best is yet to come. The experts believe the remains of a Norman castle lie buried somewhere on the site and they hope this summers dig will unearth definitive proof. Mr Wallwork said " The potential for recovering Coventrys history is very great. In the coming weeks mechanical diggers are expected to move on to the site to help speed the dig along.

This print captures the excitement and wonder of "The Dig at Bayley Lane, Coventry, Warwickshire" on May 9th, 1989. In the image, Russell Trimble, the site assistant, proudly displays some of the remarkable treasures unearthed during this archaeological excavation near the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. The dig at Bayley Lane has provided invaluable insights into Coventry's past by sifting through the remains of a 13th-century chess pit. This unique discovery sheds light on medieval sanitary and eating habits through findings such as pollen seeds, textiles, bone fragments, and even moss - serving as an intriguing equivalent to toilet roll in that era. What makes this particular dig so fascinating is its representation of layer upon layer of undisturbed history spanning from the 12th or 13th century to modern times. Excavator Ray Wallwork describes it as a microcosm of Coventry's history with buildings stacked atop one another throughout various periods. Beyond uncovering the chess pit secrets, archaeologists have also stumbled upon other significant structures including a Georgian building, a 15th-century cellar, and even remnants of a Victorian factory. However exciting these discoveries may be though; they eagerly anticipate unearthing definitive proof of a buried Norman castle believed to lie somewhere within this historical site.
