Archeologists have sifted through the remains of a 13th Century chess pit to uncover fascinating secrets about Coventrys past. The chess pit is providing an insight in to mediaeval mans sanitary and eating habits.
Pollen seeds, textiles, bone and moss - the 13th century equivalent of toilet roll - are some of the finds unearthed by the archaeologists, who started work on the site last year, in 1988.
They say the Bayley Lane dig is particularly interesting because it represents layer upon layer of undisturbed history, from the 12th or 13th century to the present day.
Excavator Ray Wallwork said " What we have here is a microcosm of Coventrys history. It shows features from just about every period, with building on top of building."
Apart front the cess pit the archaeologists have discovered a Georgian building, a 15th century cellar and a Victorian factory. But they hope the best is yet to come. The experts believe the remains of a Norman castle lie buried somewhere on the site and they hope this summers dig will unearth definitive proof. Mr Wallwork said " The potential for recovering Coventrys history is very great. In the coming weeks mechanical diggers are expected to move on to the site to help speed the dig along.
