EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in the world of theater. The image showcases three iconic figures from left to right: Tim Rice, Sarah Hugill, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. It was taken during the opening night party at the Old Barn for their groundbreaking musical, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Written by the dynamic duo of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, this production marked a significant milestone in their careers. In February 1973, under the direction of theatre producer Michael White and impresario Robert Stigwood, Joseph premiered at the Albery Theatre in London's West End. Its successful run lasted an impressive 243 performances. The musical is based on the biblical story of Joseph's "coat of many colors" from the Book of Genesis. Notably, it was not only Lloyd Webber and Rice's first publicly performed musical but also introduced audiences to their remarkable talent as composers. This snapshot transports us back to that historic evening on February 18th, 1973 when these visionary artists gathered together to celebrate their creation. As they stand side by side with smiles on their faces, we can sense both excitement and pride radiating from them. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints' collection courtesy of Daily Mirror newspaper archives, this photograph serves as a timeless reminder of an extraordinary moment in theatrical history that forever changed the landscape of musicals.
