EDITORS COMMENTS

In this photo print, Queen Elizabeth II can be seen graciously opening London City Airport, located to the east of London. Engaging in conversation with airport staff and officials, Her Majesty demonstrates her genuine interest in the momentous occasion of the airport's inauguration. London City Airport, an international hub nestled within the Royal Docks in Newham, stands as a symbol of progress and connectivity for the city. With its single 1,500-meter runway serving as a gateway to various destinations worldwide, it has become an integral part of London's transportation infrastructure. The idea for this remarkable airport was first proposed by Reg Ward in 1981. As Chief Executive of the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC), he played a pivotal role in revitalizing the area. Construction commenced on this ambitious project two years later under his guidance. On that auspicious day in May 1986 when Charles, Prince of Wales laid down the foundation stone for its terminal building, hopes were high for what would soon become an essential travel hub. Finally, on October 26th that year, commercial services began operating from London City Airport after its inaugural landing on May 31st. Queen Elizabeth II herself officially inaugurated this extraordinary facility just months later in November 1987. Since then, millions have passed through its gates each year—over 4.3 million passengers alone were served by London City Airport during 2015. This evocative photograph taken by Julian Brown transports us back to that historic moment when Queen Elizabeth II bestowed her royal presence upon this iconic landmark—a testament to human ingenuity and progress.
