Workman lining the new Mersey Tunnel with glass.
This tunnel is probably The Queensway Tunnel, which opened in 1934, and is one of 3 Mersey Tunnels that have opened over time.
The Mersey Tunnels connect Liverpool with the Wirral Peninsula, under the River Mersey. There are three tunnels: the Mersey Railway Tunnel (opened 1886), and two road tunnels, the Queensway Tunnel (opened 1934) and the Kingsway Tunnel (opened 1971). The railway tunnel and Queensway Tunnel connect Liverpool with Birkenhead, while the Kingsway Tunnel runs to Wallasey.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1930s, showcasing a group of dedicated workmen diligently lining the new Mersey Tunnel with glass. This remarkable engineering feat is most likely The Queensway Tunnel, which opened its gates in 1934, connecting Liverpool with the Wirral Peninsula beneath the mighty River Mersey. The image captures a moment frozen in time on August 28th, 1933. It portrays an army of skilled laborers working tirelessly underground, their faces etched with determination as they install each pane of glass meticulously. Their hard hats and worn-out overalls are a testament to their commitment to this ambitious project. The Mersey Tunnels hold great significance for Liverpool and its neighboring areas. Alongside the historic Mersey Railway Tunnel that opened in 1886, these tunnels have become vital transportation links between Liverpool and Birkenhead or Wallasey. As we gaze at this photograph from Memory Lane Prints, we can't help but marvel at the ingenuity behind such subterranean construction. These unsung heroes worked relentlessly under challenging conditions to create connections that would stand strong for generations to come. Let this image transport you back in time; imagine hearing the echoes of drilling reverberating through dimly lit passages as these brave workers shape history beneath our feet.
