Norman Cornish (right) gets ready for the royal presentation with Councillor Bob

Norman Cornish (right) gets ready for the royal presentation with Councillor Bob Pendlebury. Cornishs latest work of art will be subject to royal scrutiny next week. Earlier this year, the retired coal miner was commissioned by Durham County Council to paint a smaller version of his massive miners gala mural which hangs in the foyer at Durham County Hall. On Monday the council will present the painting as a gift from the people of Durham to the Duke and Duchess of York when they visit. Mr Cornish, 69 of Spennymoor, County Durham, began painting shortly after starting work down the pit as a 14 year old on Boxing Day 1933. April 1989

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the anticipation and excitement radiating from Norman Cornish as he prepares for a royal presentation alongside Councillor Bob Pendlebury. The photograph captures a significant moment in Cornish's life, as his latest masterpiece is about to undergo royal scrutiny the following week. Earlier this year, Durham County Council commissioned the retired coal miner to create a smaller version of his magnificent miners gala mural that proudly adorns the foyer at Durham County Hall. This exceptional painting will be presented by the council on Monday as a heartfelt gift from the people of Durham to none other than the esteemed Duke and Duchess of York during their visit. Norman Cornish, now 69 years old and hailing from Spennymoor in County Durham, began his artistic journey at just 14 years old while working down in the mines on Boxing Day back in 1933. His passion for art has since flourished into an extraordinary talent that has captivated audiences far and wide. This snapshot encapsulates not only Cornish's remarkable skill but also highlights his humble beginnings and unwavering dedication throughout decades. It serves as a testament to how art can transcend boundaries and touch hearts across generations.
