Colliery worker Spence Skillet Richardson has lived in Tenth Row

Colliery worker Spence Skillet Richardson has lived in Tenth Row, Ashington for more than 50 years. He was not the first person to find a house there, but he will certainly be the last to leave. For Mr Richardson, aged 63, is the only person left in the derelict row, which stands in the shadow of Ashington Colliery. The reason he is still there after his neighbours left six months ago is that he wants a replacement two bedroom house and its proving hard to get. 19th January 1977

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the resilience and determination of colliery worker Spence Skillet Richardson, who has called Tenth Row in Ashington his home for over half a century. Standing proudly amidst the derelict row, overshadowed by Ashington Colliery, Mr Richardson remains the last inhabitant after his neighbors abandoned their homes six months ago. At 63 years old, Mr Richardson's unwavering presence is fueled by his desire for a two-bedroom replacement house, an aspiration that proves to be an arduous challenge. As he stands alone in this desolate community, it becomes evident that he will not be easily swayed from leaving behind the memories and history embedded within these worn-out walls. The image encapsulates the struggles faced by those living in impoverished conditions during this era of coal mining in Northumberland. It serves as a stark reminder of the social challenges and lack of rehousing options available to individuals like Mr Richardson. In this snapshot frozen in time on January 19th, 1977, we witness both strength and vulnerability coexisting within one man's solitary existence. Through this photograph, we are compelled to reflect upon the importance of community support and accessible housing for our elderly population. The story captured here transcends mere documentation; it speaks volumes about human perseverance against adversity while shedding light on societal shortcomings that demand attention and resolution.
