Picture shows the cast of Hair, The Musical.
Far left is actor and singer Elaine Paige, wearing a pale jumper with large medallion and dark trousers.
Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical is a rock musical with a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. A product of the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the late 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. The musicals profanity, its depiction of the use of illegal drugs, its treatment of sexuality, its irreverence for the American flag, and its nude scene caused much comment and controversy. The musical broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of " rock musical", using a racially integrated cast, and inviting the audience onstage for a " Be-In" finale.
Hair opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London on September 27, 1968, led by the same creative team as the Broadway production. The opening night was delayed until the abolition of theatre censorship in England under the Theatres Act 1968 so that the show could include nudity and profanity. As with other early productions, the London show added a sprinkling of local allusions and other minor departures from the Broadway version.
Hairs engagement in London surpassed the Broadway production, running for 1, 997 performances until its closure was forced by the roof of the theatre collapsing in July 1973

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the cast of Hair, The Musical, showcasing the iconic production that defined an era. In this snapshot from 21st February 1970, we see actor and singer Elaine Paige on the far left, exuding her undeniable talent and style. She dons a pale jumper adorned with a large medallion and pairs it with dark trousers, epitomizing the fashion trends of the time. Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical emerged as a groundbreaking force in musical theatre during the late 1960s. With its rebellious spirit rooted in the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution, this rock musical became synonymous with anti-Vietnam War sentiments through anthems that resonated deeply within the peace movement. Controversial yet thought-provoking, Hair challenged societal norms by openly addressing profanity, drug use, sexuality, irreverence towards national symbols like the American flag, and even featuring a daring nude scene. It further pushed boundaries by employing a racially integrated cast and inviting audience members onstage for an immersive "Be-In" finale. Opening at London's Shaftesbury Theatre on September 27th, 1968 – after censorship laws were abolished under Theatres Act 1968 – Hair enjoyed immense success throughout its run of 1,997 performances until an unfortunate closure due to structural issues in July 1973. This remarkable image not only showcases Elaine Paige's presence but also serves as a testament to Hair's profound impact on both sides of the Atlantic.
