Penarth Pier is a Victorian era pier in the town of Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan

Penarth Pier is a Victorian era pier in the town of Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. The pier was opened in 1898 and was a popular attraction to seaside-goers at the time, who also enjoyed trips on pleasure steamers that operated from the pier. During World War I, pleasure steamers were used as minesweepers and the pier was requisitioned by the army. After the war, it was found that the landing stage was considerably damaged, and compensation payments were inadequate to fund the necessary repairs. The pier went into a period of decline, and in 1929, it was sold to Penarth Borough Council. As a result, a new concrete landing stage was built at the seaward end, and in 1930, a spectacular Art Deco pavilion, built of ferro-concrete, was constructed at the shoreward end. EDITORS COMMENTS

Step back in time with this print of Penarth Pier, a beloved Victorian era landmark nestled in the picturesque town of Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan. Opened to the public in 1898, this pier quickly became a favorite destination for seaside-goers seeking leisure and adventure. Pleasure steamers would whisk visitors away on delightful trips from the pier, adding an extra touch of excitement to their day. However, like many structures during World War I, Penarth Pier's fate took an unexpected turn. The army requisitioned the pier and repurposed pleasure steamers as minesweepers. Sadly, upon its return after the war's end, significant damage was discovered on the landing stage. Insufficient compensation payments hindered necessary repairs and led to a period of decline. In 1929, hope arrived when Penarth Borough Council purchased the pier. Determined to restore its former glory, they constructed a new concrete landing stage at the seaward end and unveiled a magnificent Art Deco pavilion in 1930 at its shoreward end – an architectural marvel that still stands today. This particular photo captures The Marina Ballroom on August 12th, 1932 – showcasing not only the grandeur of Penarth Pier but also providing us with a glimpse into life during that enchanting era. Immerse yourself in history by bringing home this extraordinary piece from Memory Lane Prints.
