EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in Birmingham's history, as Ansells Brewery pours an astonishing 400,000 pints of beer into the city's sewers. The scene unfolds amidst an intense inter-union dispute that has forced the closure of over 50 public houses, leaving locals thirsty for resolution. Representatives from the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) and the National Association of Licensed House Managers (NALHM) gather to negotiate a solution to this bitter conflict. Tensions reached their peak when 52 clerical members of TGWU were suspended for refusing to deduct union levies from NALHM members' wages. The roots of this dispute lie in TGWU's attempts to enforce a closed shop policy among managers, prompting NAHLM-affiliated Ansells managers to retaliate by closing their establishments. As a result, rivers of beer cascade down into Birmingham's underground labyrinth, symbolizing both waste and defiance. Taken on October 29th, 1975, this photograph is not merely a snapshot frozen in time but also serves as a testament to the struggles faced by workers during this era. It reflects the vibrant brewing industry that thrived in Warwickshire and West Midlands while shedding light on ethnic minority workers who played integral roles within it. As we gaze upon these hardworking individuals donning their overalls amidst barrels upon barrels of beer, we are reminded not only of their labor but also their resilience. This image encapsulates an important chapter in British industrial
