FESTIVE SCENE. Every year a popular feature of the festive period in Hull was the Christmas tree in Paragon Station which raised funds for the Mother Humber Fund. This picture was taken in December 1976 during the official switch-on by the Lord Mayor, Coun A Parker.
For many years the imposing facade of Hulls Paragon Station was a pleasing aspect of the city centre scene.
Then came the monstrosity of Paragon House which completely hid the earlier building.
Today, the former frontage of the station can again be scene as a result of the creation of the transport interchange.
Paragon House, opened in 1964 to accommodate the offices of the Hull Division of the North Eastern Region of British Railways, has been demolished.
The station has a history dating back to 1848 and was named after Paragon Street. It was designed by GT Andrews, architect for " Railway King" George Hudson and replaced the old terminus in Railway Street which was converted into a goods station.
Paragon Station is similar in layout to York Station, which was also designed by Andrews and is in an Italian Renaissance style
The opening of the station soon saw it playing an increasingly important role in local life.
According to the Victoria County History there were 35 train arrivals and 35 departures a day in 1871 and two years later 505, 022 passengers and 21, 291 excursionists used the station.
It ads: " By July 1930 the station was dealing with 170 trains daily each way and the estimated number of passengers in 1929 was1, 014, 000. The winter time-table for 1962 listed 158 daily arrivals and departures, increased in the summer of 1963 to 184 arrivals and 173 departures."

FLASHBACK220 FLASHBACK 220 FLASH BACK 220 FB220 6 / 11 / 11 OLD HUL ARCHIVE (FLASHBACK220 FLASHBACK 220 FLASH BACK 220 FB220 6/11/11 OLD HUL ARCHIVE) LIGHTS FESTIVE SCENE. Every year, Hull's Paragon Station was adorned with a magnificent Christmas tree, bringing joy to the festive period and raising funds for the Mother Humber Fund. This photo captures the moment in December of 1976 when the Lord Mayor, Coun A Parker, officially switched on the lights. The grand facade of Paragon Station was once an iconic sight in Hull's city center. However, it was later overshadowed by the construction of Paragon House, which hid its beauty from view. Fortunately, today we can once again admire the former frontage thanks to the creation of a transport interchange and demolition of Paragon House. Dating back to its opening in 1848 and named after Paragon Street, this historic station designed by GT Andrews played a vital role in local life. Over time, it grew in importance as train arrivals and departures increased significantly. In fact, according to historical records cited by Victoria County History, there were over half a million passengers using the station within just two years. This remarkable photograph takes us back to a cherished era when Paragon Station stood proudly as an architectural gem amidst bustling activity. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints' collection courtesy of Mirrorpix (not for commercial use), it serves as a nostalgic reminder of Hull's rich railway heritage.
