A famous West Wales lifeboat will be launched on a new career as the centrepiece of a maritime museum.
Enthusiasts have rescued the 81-year-old William Cantrell Ashley lifeboat which for more than 40 years was on station at New Quay, Wales.
The double-skinned lifeboat was the last rowed sail version to be used by the RNLI.
It was built by the London based Allied Iron Founders and entered service in 1907 at Newquay,
The lifeboat saw service in both world wars and took part in scores of rescues in atrocious sea conditions off the West Wales coast.
In 1948 the RNLI replaced the sail lifeboat with a powered boat and presented the old lifeboat to an outward bound centre in Aberdovey.
Subsequently it was used as a fishing boat in Milford Haven. and it was converted with an
engine and cabin.
It was found in this modified state by officials of the New Quay Maritime Museum, who bought it for £ 3, 000 and transported it to their seaside town to await restoration.

EDITORS COMMENTS
A piece of maritime history finds a new home. The renowned William Cantrell Ashley lifeboat, known for its heroic service off the West Wales coast, will now take center stage at a maritime museum. This 81-year-old double-skinned lifeboat holds a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts who have tirelessly rescued it from obscurity. Built by Allied Iron Founders in London and entering service in 1907 at Newquay, this rowed sail version was the last of its kind used by the RNLI. Throughout its illustrious career, it braved treacherous sea conditions during both world wars and participated in numerous daring rescues. After being replaced with a powered boat in 1948, the old lifeboat found itself repurposed as an outward bound center's possession and later as a fishing vessel in Milford Haven. However, fate intervened when officials from the New Quay Maritime Museum discovered it modified but still intact. Purchased for £3,000 and transported to their seaside town for restoration, this iconic vessel now awaits its grand unveiling. Museum chairman Mr. Malcolm Headley proudly poses alongside his model lifeboat – an homage to what is soon to become one of their most prized exhibits. As we celebrate this remarkable acquisition on August 12th, 1988 let us reflect on the bravery and resilience embodied within these wooden planks that once saved countless lives amidst unforgiving waves.
