EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1964, two remarkable women from the Women's Voluntary Service (WVS) are captured in action as they take on the role of "Mums" to the brave men fighting in the dense Borneo jungle. Valerie Axe, a spirited 25-year-old hailing from Hornsey, Yorkshire, and Jean Mockett, a compassionate 32-year-old from Eastbourne, Sussex, have taken it upon themselves to assist these courageous soldiers with their Christmas gift predicaments. With unwavering determination and resourcefulness, Valerie and Jean collect orders directly from the men while they are out on patrol. They then embark on an adventurous journey through the bustling stalls and shops of Kuching to barter for these precious presents. Once secured, these thoughtful gifts are swiftly transported via Forces Air Mail to be delivered to friends and loved ones eagerly awaiting news back home. The heartwarming image showcases Jean Mockett meeting up with three soldiers - Daniel Boland, Bill Rutherford, and Bill Sweeny - amidst a tranquil jungle clearing. A sense of camaraderie fills the air as cigarettes are exchanged alongside carefully crafted Christmas lists. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of how even amidst harsh conditions and far away from home during that festive season in 1964; compassion knows no boundaries. These incredible women selflessly dedicated themselves to bringing joy into the lives of those serving their country thousands of miles away.
