View of the Gravelly Hill Interchange, which is opened today. The Lancaster red rose was given as a symbol of thanks for the completion of this last section of the motorway system linking Lancashire and the North West with London and the South East. In addition, to symbolise the importance of the occasion for Lancaster, the Lord Mayor of London has today sent a very large bouquet of red roses to the Mayor of Lancaster. The bouquet contains 243 roses, one for each mile between Mansion House, London and the Town Hall of Lancaster. The roses, a welcome gesture of good will, were carried in the first private vehicle to travel from London to the North West through the new Motorway link. 24th May 1972

Symbolic Celebration - The Completion of Gravelly Hill Interchange

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness the historic opening of the Gravelly Hill Interchange on May 24th, 1972. This momentous occasion marks the completion of a vital motorway system linking Lancashire and the North West with London and the South East. As a token of gratitude for this remarkable achievement, a Lancaster red rose is proudly displayed in view. To emphasize the significance of this milestone for Lancaster, an extraordinary gesture from the Lord Mayor of London has taken place. A magnificent bouquet containing precisely 243 red roses has been sent to honor their counterparts in Lancaster. Each rose represents one mile between Mansion House in London and Lancaster's Town Hall – truly symbolizing unity across vast distances. The first private vehicle to traverse this new motorway link carries these precious roses as a heartfelt welcome gesture from London to the North West. It signifies not only goodwill but also highlights how transportation advancements have brought our communities closer together. This photograph by Bill Ellmann captures both history and beauty in one frame – showcasing not just concrete roads but also human connections forged through progress.
