EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous event in the history of Botallack Mine, located in the picturesque town of St Just in Penwith, Cornwall. Dated 24th July 1865, it showcases the descent of an inclined shaft by a royal party, none other than the Prince and Princess of Wales themselves. In this remarkable image, we see the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra seated at the front of the first skip to descend into Boscawen Shaft. Accompanying them are Mr John St Aubyn of St Michaels Mount and Lady Elizabeth St Aubyn. The next row accommodates either members from Vivians or Sutherlands family with Prince of Wales positioned behind them. At the rear end stands Captain John Rowe, diligently fulfilling his role as brakesman. The backdrop reveals Crowns pumping engine house standing tall on the right side, adding an industrial touch to this regal affair. Behind its lens is photographer Robert H. Preston who skillfully captured this historic moment for generations to come. This photograph not only encapsulates a significant visit by royalty but also pays homage to Cornwall's rich mining heritage. It serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and natural beauty that coexist harmoniously within this rugged landscape.
