Cromford Station in Derbyshire, 15 June 1911

A Manchester to St Pancras express No 723 heads through Cromford Station on the Midlands Peak line between Manchester and Derby. The line was notable for serving the estates of several members of the aristocracy. At Cromford it was the Arkwright family of Willersley Castle. The station buildings have an Alpine flavour appropriate in a part of the country known as Little Switzerland

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the picturesque Cromford Station in Derbyshire on a sunny day, precisely on 15 June 1911. As we gaze upon the image, our eyes are immediately drawn to the magnificent Manchester to St Pancras express No 723 thundering through the station. The train's powerful presence against the backdrop of this quaint countryside setting is truly awe-inspiring. Cromford Station holds a significant place in history as part of the Midlands Peak line connecting Manchester and Derby. However, what makes this railway route even more remarkable is its association with several esteemed members of society. Serving as a gateway for aristocratic estates along its path, it was no surprise that Cromford was closely linked to one such prominent family - the Arkwrights of Willersley Castle. The station buildings themselves exude an Alpine charm that perfectly complements their surroundings in what locals affectionately refer to as "Little Switzerland". This architectural choice adds an extra touch of elegance and uniqueness to Cromford Station, making it stand out among other stations across England. As we delve into this snapshot from over a century ago, we can't help but marvel at how transportation has evolved since then. Yet, despite all progress made throughout time, there remains something enchanting about capturing these moments frozen forever within photographs like this one from National Railway Museum.
