Harwich for the Continent, LNER poster, 1934

Poster produced for London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote sea services from Harwich to the Continent. The services operated both day and night, with destinations including the Hook of Holland, Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Esbjerg. The poster shows a row of steamships, seen from below to exaggerate their size, illuminated against the dark night. Artwork by Frank Mason (1876-1965), who was educated at HMS Conway and spent time at sea. He painted marine and coastal subjects. In addition to designing railway posters, he was also involved in engineering and shipbuilding in Leeds and Hartlepool

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the year 1934, when London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice travelers with their sea services from Harwich to various European destinations. The poster, skillfully crafted by artist Frank Mason, showcases a mesmerizing scene that captures the imagination. In this artwork, Mason masterfully plays with perspective and lighting to create a dramatic effect. A row of majestic steamships dominates the composition as they loom large against the dark night sky. By positioning ourselves below them, we are made acutely aware of their immense size and power. Each vessel is meticulously illuminated, casting an ethereal glow on the surrounding waters. Mason's background in engineering and shipbuilding shines through in his attention to detail. The ships depicted here are not mere abstractions but accurate representations of vessels that plied these routes during that era. This level of authenticity adds another layer of fascination for maritime enthusiasts. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this poster serves as a historical artifact showcasing LNER's commitment to providing efficient transportation options across Europe. It reminds us of an era when travel was more than just reaching a destination; it was an adventure filled with anticipation and wonder. Preserved by the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print invites us to step into Harwich's past and embark on a journey through time – one where steamships ruled the seas and distant lands beckoned with promises of discovery and excitement.
