EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and excitement of the launch of TSS Duke of York, a magnificent steamer built by Harland and Wolff at the Queens Island shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Produced as a promotional poster for the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), it showcases their services to this remarkable vessel. The TSS Duke of York was launched on 7 March 1935, with great fanfare and anticipation. Designed to operate on the Heysham to Belfast route, this steamship quickly became an icon of luxury travel. Its sleek design and impressive speed made it a favorite among passengers seeking comfort and efficiency. Renowned artist Norman Wilkinson skillfully crafted this artwork, showcasing his talent as both a marine painter and designer. Having studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art, Wilkinson had previously created posters for other railway companies such as LNWR, LMR, and SR. However, fate had more plans for the TSS Duke of York than just transporting passengers across serene waters. During World War II, it was transformed into a troop transport vessel that played a significant role in historical events like the Dieppe raid in August 1942. With its rich history intertwined with wartime heroism and elegant voyages alike, this stunning poster serves as a testament to both engineering marvels and artistic excellence. Preserved by the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, it allows us to admire not only the beauty but also appreciate how railways have shaped our world
