EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolour print of Waterloo Station, created by talented artist Helen McKie in 1948, was commissioned as part of the centenary celebrations marking the opening of this iconic railway hub. The poster serves as a commemoration of a century's worth of uninterrupted service during times of both war and peace. Helen McKie, an accomplished artist who studied at the Lambeth School of Art and showcased her work at prestigious venues such as the Paris Salon and leading London galleries, not only designed posters for Southern Railways (SR), but also wrote and illustrated booklets and other promotional materials. Her creative talents extended beyond visual arts to include designing uniforms and upholstery. In fact, she was even entrusted with adorning two new coaches for the cross-Channel service in 1939. The artwork itself beautifully captures the essence of Waterloo Station with its clocks ticking away on bustling platforms filled with steam trains. It evokes a sense of nostalgia while paying homage to the station's enduring legacy. This particular print is now preserved within the National Railway Museum's collection, serving as a testament to McKie's artistic prowess and her contribution to promoting Southern Railways. As we admire this stunning piece, let us reflect upon not just its aesthetic appeal but also its historical significance in commemorating one hundred years of unwavering service that has connected countless individuals across time and space through this remarkable transportation hub.
