EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the golden age of rail travel, specifically to the picturesque Yorkshire coast in 1937. Produced by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), this stunning poster was designed to entice travelers to explore the beauty of Whitby and its surrounding areas. The artwork, skillfully created by Frank Henry Mason, showcases a bird's-eye view of the rugged coastline near Whitby. The scene is brought to life with vibrant colors and intricate details that transport viewers into a world where steam locomotives gracefully glide along parallel tracks, mirroring the curves of the cliffs below. Mason's deep connection with marine subjects shines through in this piece as he captures not only the grandeur of nature but also hints at his engineering and shipbuilding background. Seagulls soar above, adding an element of freedom and tranquility to an already breathtaking panorama. Measuring 1016 mm x 1270 mm, this print invites us on a journey through time. It serves as a reminder that once upon a time, rail travel was not just about reaching destinations efficiently but also about experiencing awe-inspiring landscapes along the way. Preserved by National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this remarkable image allows us to appreciate both Mason's artistic talent and LNER's commitment to promoting exploration and adventure through their railway network.
