During an extreme heat-stress event at Melbournes Yarra Bend Grey-headed Flying-fox

During an extreme heat-stress event at Melbournes Yarra Bend Grey-headed Flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) colony, where temperatures exceeded 43'C, in a desperate search for somewhere cooler and less exposed, Grey-headed Flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) descend from the safety of the tree canopy looking for a cooler place. Ironically and sadly, this behaviour results in what experts call clumping - where the number of bats in close proximity means that the animals get even hotter. It is often a precursor to mass deaths. On the ground there were already many dead bats that had succumb to this heat-stress event. Hot Bats in a Clump - When Flying Foxes Seek Coolness, but Find More Heat!

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured by Doug Gimesy, we witness the desperate search for relief during an extreme heat-stress event at Melbourne's Yarra Bend Grey-headed Flying-fox colony. As temperatures soared above 43°C, these intelligent creatures descended from their safe tree canopy havens in pursuit of cooler and less exposed spots. Ironically and sadly, what experts call "clumping" occurs when the bats gather closely together to escape the scorching heat. Little did they know that this behavior only intensified their discomfort! The large number of bats huddled together created even more heat, exacerbating their plight and potentially leading to mass deaths - a chilling precursor to tragedy. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking image taken at Yarra Bend Golf Course in Fairfield, Victoria, Australia in December 2019, we can't help but feel both awe and concern for these magnificent grey-headed flying foxes. Their struggle against rising temperatures serves as a stark reminder of the environmental challenges our world faces today. Let us use this powerful visual representation as a catalyst for change - raising awareness about climate change, global warming, and its impact on vulnerable species like these endangered flying foxes. Together, we can strive towards creating a cooler future where nature thrives harmoniously with humanity.
