EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is a captivating representation of two intriguing bird species: the Great Tinamou (Tinamus major) and the Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus). The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Sciences: Ornithology), published in Paris, France, between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The Great Tinamou, also known as the Greater Rhea, is a large, flightless bird native to South America. With its brown plumage and distinctive red wattles, this near-threatened species is depicted in the foreground, standing among rocks and vegetation. The Western Capercaillie, a large grouse species native to Europe, is shown in the background, surrounded by trees and foliage. Its intricate plumage, featuring a mix of brown, black, and white feathers, is beautifully rendered in this meticulously handcolored engraving. The engraving was produced by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The intricate details of the birds and their environments are a testament to the skill and artistry of the engraver and the painter. This exquisite piece is a valuable addition to any collection of natural history or ornithology, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century.
