The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The Great Tinamou, also known as the Greater Rhea, is a large, flightless bird native to South America.
