EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Jussieus Dictionary of Natural Science published in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases two magnificent animals of the African savannah: the Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) and the Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros). The illustration, directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), is a testament to the artistic mastery of the time. The Nilgai, also known as the Blue Bull, is depicted on the left side of the print. This large antelope is native to the Indian subcontinent and is characterized by its blue-grey coat, white underbelly, and distinctive white spots on its flanks. The Nilgai was a popular exhibit in European zoos during the 19th century, and its image graced many natural history publications. On the right side of the print, the Greater Kudu, the largest of the kudu species, is depicted in all its majesty. Its coat is a mix of brown and white spots, with a distinctive stripe running down its side. The Greater Kudu's large, spiraled horns are also prominently displayed. This elusive antelope is native to Central and East Africa and is known for its agility and excellent sense of smell. This beautiful illustration not only captures the physical attributes of these animals but also transports us back in time to the era of European natural history exploration and discovery. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the print are a testament to the dedication and skill of the artists and publishers of the time. Today, this illustration serves as an important historical record of the natural world and a reminder of the rich artistic heritage of the past.
