Lake Erie Collection

Lake Erie is the fourth-largest of the five Great Lakes of North America, and the eleventh-largest lake in the world, and is located on the international border between Canada and the United States, forming part of the border between Ontario and New York. The lake has a surface area of 9,990 square miles (25,744 km2), making it slightly smaller than Lake Ontario but larger than Lake Huron, and is approximately 210 miles (340 km) long and 57 miles (92 km) wide at its widest point. Its average depth is 62 feet (19 m), with a maximum depth of 210 feet (64 m). The lake contains numerous islands, including Pelee Island in Canada and South Bass Island in Ohio. Its shores are heavily populated; major cities include Buffalo, Cleveland, Toledo, Detroit and Windsor. The lake supports a large commercial fishery for walleye as well as other species such as perch and whitefish. Recreational activities such as sailing, swimming and fishing are popular on Lake Erie's waters during summer months.
