Lake Eyre Collection

Lake Eyre is a large, shallow lake located in the arid interior of Australia, and is the lowest point in Australia, at 15 metres below sea level. The lake is part of an endorheic basin that includes several other smaller lakes and salt pans, and covers an area of 9500 square kilometres. The lake's water level fluctuates greatly due to its location in a desert climate with highly variable rainfall. When full it can be up to 9 metres deep, but during dry periods it can become completely dry for extended periods of time. The surrounding region supports a variety of wildlife including birds, fish and reptiles as well as some rare species such as the Lake Eyre Dragonfly and has been recognised as an important wetland habitat by both state and federal governments who have taken steps to protect it from over-exploitation or degradation from human activities such as mining or agriculture.
