EDITORS COMMENTS

In this evocative image, William Waynfleet, Bishop of Winchester (1395?-1486), is depicted in full regalia, wearing the distinctive mitre and holding a pastoral staff. Waynfleet's significance in English history lies not only in his ecclesiastical role but also in his founding of Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1448. Born into a noble family, Waynfleet was educated at Oxford before embarking on a career in the Church. He rose through the ranks, becoming a royal chaplain and eventually the Bishop of Winchester in 1447. During his tenure, he demonstrated a deep commitment to education and the arts. In 1448, Waynfleet established Magdalen College, Oxford, which was initially intended as a college for secular canons. However, it later evolved into a house of scholars dedicated to the study of theology, law, and philosophy. The college's foundation charter, which is still in existence, reflects Waynfleet's vision of providing a place for scholars to pursue knowledge and learning. The college's name, Magdalen, is believed to have been inspired by the Biblical figure of Mary Magdalene. Waynfleet's foundation of Magdalen College marked a significant moment in the history of Oxford University, as it was one of the first colleges to be established during the late medieval period. This image of Bishop Waynfleet, with his impressive mitre and regal bearing, serves as a reminder of his important role in English history and the legacy he left behind through the founding of Magdalen College, Oxford. The college continues to thrive today, remaining a vibrant center of academic excellence and scholarly pursuits.
