Aurora Borealis display over Manitoba, Canada

Aurora Borealis. Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights display over a large boulder on snow. Aurorae are caused by the interaction between energetic charged particles from the Sun and gas molecules in the upper atmosphere about 100 kilometres up. A stream of charged particles, called the solar wind, flows out into space continuously from the Sun at speeds of 400-500 kilometres per second. On reaching Earth, the charged particles are drawn by Earths magnetic field to the poles, where they collide with gas molecules in the upper atmosphere, causing them to emit light. Photographed from Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © CHRIS MADELEY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This breathtaking print captures the mesmerizing beauty of an Aurora Borealis display over Manitoba, Canada. The ethereal dance of colors illuminates the night sky, creating a stunning contrast against the snowy landscape and a large boulder in the foreground. Aurora Borealis, also known as Northern Lights, is a natural phenomenon caused by the interaction between charged particles from the Sun and gas molecules in Earth's upper atmosphere. As energetic particles from the solar wind travel towards our planet at incredible speeds, they are guided by Earth's magnetic field to its poles. In this image taken from Churchill, Manitoba, we witness nature's own light show as these charged particles collide with gas molecules about 100 kilometers above us. The collision triggers an electromagnetic effect that causes these gas molecules to emit vibrant light. The result is a celestial spectacle that leaves onlookers in awe of its splendor. The vivid hues of green, purple, blue, and pink paint streaks across the night canvas like brushstrokes of pure magic. This photograph serves as a reminder of how wondrous our world can be when science and nature intertwine harmoniously. It encapsulates not only the captivating effects created by aurorae but also showcases Earth's unique ability to create such extraordinary displays for those fortunate enough to witness them firsthand.
