Coloured SEM of a human head louse on hair shafts

Head louse. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis) clinging to human hair. The head louse inhabits the hair of the head, glueing its eggs (called nits) to the shafts of individual hairs. It lives on blood, which it sucks from the scalp. The wounds left by the lice cause intense itching, which can lead to dermatitis and impetigo (a bacterial infection of the skin). The problems are compounded by reflex scratching of the bites. The lice can spread from head to head by close contact. Nits and lice can be killed by washing the hair with special medicated shampoos. Magnification: x44 at 6x7cm size. x106 at 7x5.5ins. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human head louse clinging to human hair shafts. The intricate details captured in this image provide a fascinating insight into the life of these tiny creatures. The head louse, scientifically known as Pediculus humanus capitis, is commonly found inhabiting the hair on our heads. In this close-up view, we can observe how the head louse attaches its eggs, called nits, to individual hair shafts using a strong adhesive. Feeding exclusively on blood extracted from the scalp, these parasites can cause various skin conditions such as dermatitis and impetigo due to their bites. The resulting intense itching often leads to reflex scratching that further exacerbates the problem. The transmission of head lice occurs through close contact between individuals. However, there are effective ways to combat infestations by washing the hair with specially formulated medicated shampoos that kill both nits and adult lice. With magnification levels reaching x44 at 6x7cm size and x106 at 7x5.5ins dimensions, this SEM image offers an up-close encounter with one of nature's most persistent pests. Its striking colours and intricate structures make it not only scientifically valuable but also visually stunning. This remarkable photograph serves as a reminder of the complexity and diversity present even within seemingly mundane aspects of our daily lives – highlighting once again how science continues to amaze us with its ability to reveal hidden wonders all around.
