The south drive at Goonvrea House, Perranarworthal, Cornwall. December 1924

A view of the tree-lined south drive at Goonvrea House. In 1980, Rex Barratt writes in his book, Stately Homes in and Around Truro, " Goonvrea, probably built by the Fox family of Falmouth and later owned and occupied by Sir Frederick Martin Williams, M.P. for Truro (1865-1878), who was a director of the Perran Iron Foundry and the first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons of Cornwall. Later owners were J.P. Paull, and W.E. Harris, who was there in 1939. During the last war it was utilised by U.S. troops and is now a well-known hotel". The hotel was owned by Tony and Joyce Webb and is reported to have been devastated by fire in 1982. By the early 1990s new build houses were erected on the site. The stable block remained standing and has since been converted into houses. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting south drive at Goonvrea House in Perranarworthal, Cornwall, during December 1924. The tree-lined pathway exudes a sense of grandeur and tranquility, inviting visitors to explore the magnificent estate. Goonvrea House has a rich history, believed to have been built by the esteemed Fox family of Falmouth. It later became the residence of Sir Frederick Martin Williams, an influential figure who served as Member of Parliament for Truro from 1865 to 1878. Sir Williams was not only associated with the renowned Perran Iron Foundry but also held the prestigious position of being Cornwall's first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons. Over time, ownership changed hands and notable individuals such as J. P. Paull and W. E. Harris resided within its walls. During World War II, Goonvrea House played a vital role as it provided accommodation for U. S troops stationed in Cornwall. Tragically, in 1982, this historic establishment suffered severe damage due to a devastating fire under the ownership of Tony and Joyce Webb. However, by the early 1990s new houses were constructed on-site while preserving the stable block which has since been converted into charming residences. Photographed by Arthur William Jordan, this image immortalizes a moment frozen in time - showcasing both the allure and significance that Goonvrea House holds within Cornish heritage.
