EDITORS COMMENTS

In this iconic photograph, Everton Football Club's Andy Gray is captured in a moment of pure jubilation as he lifts the European Cup Winners Cup aloft following Everton's 3-1 victory over Rapid Vienna on May 15, 1985, at Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The European Cup Winners Cup was a prestigious European football competition open to the winners of their respective domestic cup competitions. This final match was a highly anticipated clash between two formidable teams, each seeking to etch their name into European football history. The first half of the game saw both teams trading opportunities, with neither able to gain a decisive advantage. However, in the second half, Everton's attacking prowess came to the forefront. Gary Lineker opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, followed by a brace from Andy Gray in the 65th and 85th minutes. Rapid Vienna managed to pull one back through Andreas Herzog in the 89th minute, but it was too little, too late. The photo captures the elation and relief on Gray's face as he holds the trophy aloft, surrounded by his teammates and the sea of blue and white Everton scarves in the stands. The victory marked a significant milestone for Everton, who had previously only won the FA Cup and the League Cup. The European Cup Winners Cup triumph solidified their place among Europe's elite football clubs and provided a sense of redemption for the team and their fans. This photograph is a testament to the passion, determination, and skill that defined Everton Football Club during this era.
