'The Broads', LNER/LMS poster, 1937

Poster produced for London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) and London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail travel to the Norfolk Broads, '200 Miles of Safe Inland Waterways'. The poster shows holidaymakers on board the motorcruiser 'Joy' and advertises floating holidays for £4 per week. Artwork by Arthur C Michael, a painter and etcher who worked mainly in watercolour or bodycolour. He illustrated books and periodicals as well as designing posters for LNER. Dimensions: 1016 mm x 1270 mm

Snowdonia', LMS poster, c 1933

Poster produced for the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail travel to Snowdonia in Wales. In 1923 the LMS boasted in its booklet 'The Wonderland of Wales' that 'Snowdon and the Welsh Highlands are synonymous with scenery of ravishing beauty. Ancient story, sweet murmurs of mountain streams and soul stirring music of peasant people add to the delights of this romantic region as a holiday ground.'
Artwork by Charles H Baker, who was born in Ilminster and educated at Berkhamstead School. He was Head of Research at the Huntington Library, California. He painted landscapes in oil and designed posters for LMS

'The Flying Scotsman's Cocktail Bar', LNER poster, c 1930s

In the 1920s and 30s the London & North Eastern Railway press department worked extremely hard to nurture the image of the Flying Scotsman.
