The sun sets in Poco Redondo in the drought ravaged northeast of Brazil

The sun sets in Poco Redondo, one of the towns declared in drought emergency in the northeastern state of Sergipe, January 11, 2013. Brazils northeast is suffering its worst drought in five decades, according to the agricultural minister of Bahia State, threatening hydro-power supplies in an area prone to blackouts and potentially slowing economic growth in one of the countrys emerging agricultural frontiers. Lack of rain has hurt corn and cotton crops, left cattle and goats to starve to death in dry pastures and wiped some 30 percent off sugar cane production in the region responsible for 10 percent of Brazils cane output. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking beauty of a sunset in Poco Redondo, a town situated in the drought-ravaged northeast region of Brazil. Taken on January 11,2013, by renowned photographer Lunae Parracho for Reuters Images, this image serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact that the worst drought in five decades has had on this area. The northeastern state of Sergipe declared Poco Redondo and several other towns as being in a state of emergency due to the severe water shortage caused by prolonged dry spells. The agricultural minister of Bahia State warned that this crisis could potentially lead to blackouts and hinder economic growth in one of Brazil's emerging agricultural frontiers. The lack of rainfall has taken its toll on various crops such as corn and cotton, resulting in significant losses for farmers. Additionally, livestock like cattle and goats have been left to starve to death amidst barren pastures. The sugar cane industry has also suffered greatly with production dropping by around 30% in an area responsible for 10% of Brazil's total output. Through this powerful photograph, Parracho skillfully captures both the natural beauty and harsh reality faced by those living through this environmental catastrophe. It serves as a stark reminder not only of the challenges posed by climate change but also highlights the resilience and strength exhibited by communities affected by these adverse conditions.
